The 3 principles of circularity

Generally, manufacturers are waking up to the fact that their products have an impact on the environment throughout the entire lifecycle – from raw material extraction and processing to the safe treatment and disposal of waste. New legislation and increasing awareness by consumers are driving more responsibility to fall on manufacturers, companies and brands.

Up until now, there hasn’t been a viable alternative to plastic used in manufacturing products to scale. Current alternative composite materials – like sugar beet, sawdust and bamboo – while reducing environmental impact, still cause damage in unseen ways, but damage nonetheless. For example, the melamine coating used by some of these composites to achieve the glossy look of plastic. These products won’t biodegrade quickly and the melamine is harmful to the living ecosystem.

Bioplastics are more harmful to the environment over their lifecycle than traditional plastics and those that claim to be biodegradable require industrial processes, that most towns and cities can’t handle.
